An Al Ain employer who was found guilty of severely hitting her housemaid and breaking her ribs was ordered to pay her Dh70,000 as compensation.
The Al Ain Appeals Court upheld a ruling ordering the woman to pay her maid compensation for attacking her, breaking two of her ribs, and damaging her backbone.
According to official court records, the housemaid sued her female employer in civil court and demanded that she pay her Dh100,000 in damages for the bodily, material, and moral harm that resulted from the beatings.
The maid claimed in her lawsuit that while doing housework for her sponsor in Al Ain, the defendant in the case—his wife—assaulted her.
She asserted that the woman had badly struck her in the stomach, chest, ribs, and other body parts. The boss allegedly punched the maid in the face and repeatedly smacked her in the eyes. The woman had previously been fined 2,000 Dh and found guilty of mistreating the maid in criminal court.
The woman should be sued in civil court for damages, the court advised the maid. According to a forensic report made by a doctor chosen by the first Instance court, the beatings caused the maid to sustain fractures to her vertebral column (back bone) and two ribs.
According to the complaint, the maid experienced lower back pain that rendered her permanently incapacitated and made it difficult for her to bend down and move around. The doctor put the level of damage at 20%.
Additionally, the medical report demonstrated that the maid’s chronic illnesses were to blame for her eyesight loss in both of her eyes. The maid had no skull fractures or brain damage, according to the doctor.
The Civil Court of First Instance had previously ordered the sponsor’s wife to pay the maid Dh70,000 in damages compensation in addition to supporting her legal expenses.
The verdict was challenged by the employer, and the appeals court upheld the lower court’s original judgement.
