One year has passed since the tragic demise of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of Iran’s ‘morality police.’ In retrospect, we contemplate the enduring impact of her untimely death.

For Mahdi and his sister Mina, the loss of Mahsa Amini marked a watershed moment in their lives. It ignited an unyielding determination to alter the treatment of women within Iran. Fuelled by their aspiration for a better future, they embarked on a journey of activism, becoming part of the wave of protests that swept across the nation. Their motivation extended to safeguarding Mina’s 12-year-old daughter from the same fate that befell Mahsa, according to Mahdi.

However, their pursuit of justice was not without dire consequences. After a video of Mina hurling stones at an image of Iran’s supreme leader went viral, both siblings found themselves apprehended by the authorities. Mahdi alleges that they endured physical beatings, torture, and menacing threats, particularly directed at his niece. Despite Mina’s eventual release from more than a month of incarceration, she was unjustly sentenced to lashes and over a decade in prison. Yet, she steadfastly refused to be silenced, compelling the brother and sister to eventually flee Iran, seeking refuge abroad.

Negin Shiraghaei, a prominent activist and former journalist, elucidates how the Iranian regime’s oppressive measures quelled physical demonstrations like those led by Mahdi and Mina. Nevertheless, she contends that their actions were far from futile. In the face of adversity, civil disobedience persists, and activists are ingeniously devising novel means of organization. Shiraghaei further underscores that the solidarity forged on the streets has catalyzed a transformative shift in gender dynamics within Iran.

Currently residing in a foreign land, Mahdi candidly elucidates the depth of their sacrifices and underscores their unwavering hope for imminent change in Iran, even as a year has elapsed since their ardent activism commenced.

In essence, the tragic passing of Mahsa Amini has catalyzed a wave of activism in Iran, where individuals like Mahdi and Mina have braved persecution, incarceration, and exile in pursuit of a more equitable future for women. While physical protests may have been stifled by a repressive regime, the embers of dissent continue to smolder, offering hope that change may eventually grace the nation’s doorstep. The enduring legacy of Mahsa Amini serves as a poignant reminder that the quest for justice and equality perseveres, undeterred by the passage of time.
