HD images of Earth launches into space. The nation’s first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite is part of a “constellation” that can provide high-definition images of the ground in the region and beyond in close to real time. On Friday, a highly advanced UAE satellite launched and successfully entered the orbit. It is the nation’s first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite with a low Earth orbit (LEO) in space.

Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) of the United Arab Emirates launched the SAR satellite, which is owned by AI-powered geospatial solutions provider Bayanat. The first routine operations are being carried out, and the satellite has established communication.

The historic launch of the satellite, the most recent accomplishment of the partnership between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE, is a significant milestone that will enhance the companies’ and the region’s capabilities for Earth observation. SAR, in contrast to conventional optical imaging satellites, is able to take pictures even when the sun is not shining or the weather is bad. An active sensing system known as SAR technology generates high-resolution images by illuminating the Earth’s surface and measuring the reflected signal.

This satellite, which is a part of the Earth Observation Space Program, shows off the entire SAR constellation, which will provide solutions for persistent, high-resolution monitoring. The Earth Observation Space Program: What is It? This massive undertaking was initiated in 2023 with the intention of constructing a constellation of SAR satellites for the UAE’s national satellite remote sensing and Earth observation capabilities.

SAR applications will benefit from a consistent data stream from the constellation of LEO satellites. Bayanat and Yahsat will be able to provide near-real-time, high-definition images of the conditions on the ground throughout the Middle East and beyond because the orbiting satellites will return to the region more frequently.

The companies’ ability to provide timely and accurate geospatial insights, which are crucial for disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility applications, is enhanced by this strategic initiative. The radar antenna on ICEYE covers a much larger area and provides higher-resolution images of smaller areas than other new Space SAR satellite services, offering customers more value.

Ali Al Hashemi, group CEO of Yahsat, stated,

“The SAR satellite constellation that will be launched over the next three years will enable us to expand as a multi-orbit satellite operator, encompassing geostationary orbit and low Earth orbit satellites while also developing satellite manufacturing capabilities in the UAE.”

“This is a triumphant moment for Bayanat and a defining step toward our future as Space42,” stated Hasan Al Hosani, managing director of Bayanat. Our position as a leader in AI-powered geospatial analytics will be further bolstered by the launch of our Earth Observation capabilities and SAR satellite constellation.”
