Airfares to UAE soar for expats returning after vacation

Airfares

Expatriates returning to the UAE after their vacations are encountering steep increases in airfares, leading many to delay their travel plans due to the financial burden. This issue is particularly affecting residents from the Indian subcontinent, such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Several individuals have been forced to alter or cancel their return plans due to the exorbitant cost of flights.

For instance, Saleem Ahmed, a Pakistani national, went on leave in June but had to postpone his return due to personal reasons. When attempting to reschedule his return ticket, his travel agent advised him to cancel it and seek a refund to buy a new ticket later. Unfortunately, this decision has proven problematic, as the cost of a one-way return ticket has surged to over Rs100,000 (Dh1,277), significantly higher than the usual fare of Dh1,100-Dh1,200.

Many other expatriates, including those from India, the Philippines, and Bangladesh, have encountered similar challenges. Shaffa Shahid, a teacher in Sharjah, had to abandon her plans to return to the UAE with her family after noticing a sudden increase in airfares. Her family of eight was faced with airfares of over Rs25,000 (Dh1,110) per person.

To cope with the high costs, some families are considering splitting their travel into groups or altering school attendance plans. Shamshuddin, a Dubai resident, had to accept that his children might miss classes due to the unaffordable airfare for adjusting their return date.

Travel industry experts have expressed their concerns about the situation. Taha Siddique from Siddique Travels highlighted the difficulty for families to afford airfares exceeding Dh1,560 from South Indian cities. Geoffrey Salatan, President and CEO of Geoffrey Travel, noted that airfares from the Philippines have surged, leading some individuals to postpone their travel plans to the UAE.

Despite these challenges, some residents who have already booked round-trip tickets appear less concerned about ticket prices. However, the overall situation highlights the financial strain and disruptions faced by expatriates returning to the UAE after their vacations.
