An Emirati woman who had been avoiding food due to her “fear of food” has finally found treatment thanks to a multidisciplinary Abu Dhabi team of doctors. She was saved in high-risk surgery.
Because of the severe pain she experienced after eating, the patient refused any food.
She was found to have mesenteric angina, which occurs when blood flow to the small intestines is restricted by blocked or narrowed arteries, resulting in severe abdominal pain, nausea, and fever.
Patients’ guts prepare to eat as soon as they smell food, but they experience acute pain due to a lack of blood supply to the gut.Typically, the condition causes unintentional weight loss.
However, this patient’s significant weight loss prompted her to see the Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) specialists.
