After significant technological improvements, it is now completely functional for arrivals and departures.

After a successful repair project, Abu Dhabi Airports on Saturday announced the early reopening of Zayed International Airport’s (AUH) Northern Runway (13L/31R), which is now fully operational for arrivals and departures.

There were several noteworthy improvements brought about by the Northern Runway Rehabilitation project. Significant technological breakthroughs were made during the project, in addition to reinforcing and resurfacing the runway with 210,000 tons of asphalt to ensure resilience and durability. These include replacing over 1,200 energy-intensive halogen airfield lights with environmentally friendly LED technology, installing a state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS) for increased operational precision, and installing a new, redundant ground visibility monitoring system for increased safety.Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility is demonstrated by the installation of LED lighting, and the modernization of vital navigational aids such as the ILS and Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems enhances aircraft operations’ efficiency and safety, particularly in bad weather.

“The successful completion of the North Runway Rehabilitation Project at Zayed International Airport reflects not only the strategic foresight of Abu Dhabi Airports but also the UAE’s dedication to innovation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector,” stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA. This initiative demonstrates our dedication to raising UAE airports’ international status in accordance with the GCAA and the country’s long-term prosperity objective.

“The successful completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project ahead of schedule is a direct result of meticulous planning, effective stakeholder collaboration, and a steadfast dedication to operational excellence,” stated Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports. With this improved infrastructure, we will be able to maximize airport throughput at AUH and efficiently handle ongoing growth in air traffic demand.”

Immediately resuming dual-runway operations enables the airport to better accommodate the increasing demand from airlines. Abu Dhabi Airports effectively oversaw operations at Abu Dhabi via the Southern Runway as a single-runway operation during the closure. By skillfully handling the surge in aviation traffic, smooth everyday operations were preserved, guaranteeing uninterrupted safety and continuity.
