The previous record was held by Pakistan, with 8,290 people taking part in a human flag attempt in 2015.
The human flag attempt is just one of the Guinness World Records that have been set in Sharjah in recent years. The Sharjah Cricket Stadium is no stranger to world records, having previously been home to the world’s longest cricket marathon. The marathon, which was held in 2013, saw 1,131 people take part and raised over AED1 million for charity.
The Sri Lanka-Afghanistan match on Saturday marked the stadium’s 281st international game. The match in the DP World Asia Cup 2022 enabled the location to surpass the Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia’s record for hosting the most international cricket matches, which was a Guinness World Record.
The Sharjah Cricket Stadium has now hosted more international matches than any other cricket ground in the world. The record-breaking match was a special one for Afghanistan as well, as it marked the country’s first-ever game in the Asia Cup.
