Our Planetary System Exposed by Space Rocks

Space Rocks and Our Planetary System

Space Rocks tell it all since our planetary system existed for only 4.5 billion years, and people just strolled the Earth for the last 300,000 years.

To get an understanding of the planetary system as a whole, researchers frequently follow hints form space rocks and debris to gain insights into the history of deep space.

Such hints typically are available in space rocks, which tells us a lot about the origin of our planetary system and how it took shape.

There are 3 kinds of space rocks: Asteroids, Comets, and meteoroids.

Types of Asteroids

Much smaller than planets, asteroids are rocky items that orbit the Sun. They are made up of rocks and metals leftover from the development of the 4 planets closest to the Sun – described as the inner planetary system – when a substantial cloud of dust and gas collapsed to form a huge star. Asteroids are unusually formed, with craters and irregular orbits.

They can be little stones to many kilometres in size, they reside in an area between Mars and Jupiter, referred to as the Asteroid Belt, where they are often pulled into Earth’s orbit. Ceres, typically called a dwarf, is the biggest recognized asteroid in the Asteroid Belt, practically 1,000 kilometres in size.

Apart from acquiring details on the chemical and physical properties of asteroids, NASA’s objectives are to study them so as to anticipate the possible threats they present to Earth.

Interesting Facts about Comets

Varying from the size of a home to 10 kilometres in size, comets are made up of not just rock and dust They are comprised of ice and gas also. Researchers think that they come from the Oort Cloud, an extremely cold area that surrounds the planetary system, and the Kuiper Belt, which lies beyond Neptune.

Comets are thought to be residues from the development of external planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Although they were formed around the same time as asteroids, comets were developed in chillier/colder areas where water might freeze.

Comets orbit around the Sun, yet in a more elliptical way than their asteroid equivalents. When drawn in a different orbit, the icy nucleus of the comet begins to vaporise, and the ice and gasses boil off and surround the nucleus to form a cloud called a coma.

The dust particles and gases are pressed away from the coma by solar winds to form the tail, which can be 150 million kilometres long. Each time the comet passes near the Sun, it loses a few of its parts. With time, it will separate and vanish entirely. If it hits Earth’s orbit, the dust and particles left in the comet’s wake will fall to Earth, ending up as meteoroids.

What are Meteoroids made of?

Smaller than an asteroid or comet, a meteoroid is a piece of rock that orbits the Sun and has broken off from a comet or asteroid. When a meteoroid gets in Earth’s atmosphere, the friction triggers a streak of light and vaporises the meteoroid to form a meteor, which is likewise referred to as a shooting star.

Meteor showers explain the phenomenon of burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. If the meteoroid endures its journey through Earth’s environment and hits the ground, it is described as a meteorite.

According to NASA, while 100 tonnes of small dust and sand particles attack/hit Earth every day from deep space, meteorites the size of a football field struck Earth 2,000 years ago. Every couple of million years, a rock big enough to threaten civilization occurs. Researchers approximate that the two-billion-year-old Vredefort crater in South Africa, now 100 kilometres wide, was initially 3 times that size.

Big or real little, our Planetary System Exposed by Space Rocks does not pose a hazard/threat to human beings. Rather, they function as essential tools for researchers to better understand our planetary system and beyond.
