Pezeshkian takes on Jalili in a run-off. In Iran’s run-off presidential election, which pits Saeed Jalili against Masoud Pezeshkian, the electoral authorities announce an extension of the voting period.

While Jalili is seen as a representative of the conservative establishment, Pezeshkian is thought to be a moderate and reform-minded candidate. Pezeshkian won the first round on June 28 with approximately 42.5%. With 38.7%, Jalili came in second.

The quick election is to replace Ebrahim Raisi, who passed away in May in a helicopter crash. Mohammad Mokhber, interim president, claims that more voters have already voted out than in the first round. The lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution was recorded last week, at 40%.
