State media reported that a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Iran’s Kashmar, a city in the northeast, killed at least four people and injured 120 others on Tuesday.
The shudder struck at 1:24pm (9:54am GMT), Kashmar’s lead representative, Hajatollah Shariatmadari, who gave the loss cost, said on state TV. He said that 35 people were taken to the hospital. He also said that the earthquake damaged mostly old buildings in the city’s urban and rural areas. After the earthquake, footage of first responders working in a street where all of the buildings had been destroyed was shown on state television.
The earthquake struck at a depth of ten kilometers, or six miles, according to the United States Geological Survey. Iran sits on different structural plates and is much of the time hit by seismic tremors.
A 5.9 greatness shudder early last year killed three individuals and harmed more than 800 in the country’s rocky northwest, close to the line with Turkiye. In addition, over 31,000 people were killed in a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Iranian city of Bam in 2003, making it one of the deadliest disasters on record.
