Experts told Khaleej Times that people who work in the sun aren’t the only ones at risk for heat-related health problems. Even people who work in offices with air conditioning could be affected. The physical effects of being in the heat, such as heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, are well-known to many.

However, what is often overlooked is its impact on mental health, which may ultimately hinder computer users’ productivity. Dana Berri, a psychologist at Aman Lil Afia Clinic, stated, “Extreme heat not only poses serious physical health risks but also significantly impacts mental health.” Various mental health issues, including irritability and depression symptoms, have been linked to heat waves and extreme temperatures, according to research. Additionally, it has the potential to influence behavior, resulting in increased aggression. She added that memory issues, decreased attention, and slower reaction times have been linked to elevated temperatures.

“In addition, during times of extreme heat, mood disorders like depression and mania are 40% more likely to require hospitalization. According to Berri, the statistic is a component of a growing body of scientific research establishing a link between mental health and heat.

“The complex interaction of biological and psychological responses between high temperatures and mental health is at the heart of the connection. She went on to say that the psychological distress brought on by heat stress can be exacerbated by disturbed sleep patterns, which can upset hormone balance and result in higher stress hormone levels.

Explanation of heat stress In general, heat stress occurs when the body takes in more heat than it can release from its surroundings. Heat exhaustion can be caused by high ambient temperatures, high humidity, physical activity, and not drinking enough water. Neeta Jhaveri, a functional medicine practitioner and Wellth health coach, stated, “Anyone exposed to high temperatures and humidity – especially if they are not getting proper hydration and cooling – can be vulnerable to heat stress.” Mental well-being and health are affected by heat stress.

According to Dr. Aida Al Suhaimi, a clinical psychologist at Medcare Kamali Clinic, “but it is also important to understand and recognize the symptoms of heat stress, as they may vary from person to person.” “Some symptoms may include persistent tension, irritability, easy irritability, poor sleep, decreased motivation, lack of interest in activities, and low mood,” according to the article. “It causes irregular sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and decreased productivity at work, all of which have the potential to elicit signs of depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can get worse if these patterns persist for a long time, according to Dr. Al Suhaimi.

Dr. Al Suhaimi advised, “be open to finding new ways to enjoy them,” even though it would be wonderful to continue outdoor activities throughout the summer. “Rather than relying solely on activities such as walking,” advises the author, “be flexible and explore various ways to deal with stress.” Here are some additional health advice: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid becoming dehydrated. Eat healthy food to improve your overall health.

Practice remaining present and recognizing your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations to maintain mindfulness. Keep calm by practicing deep breathing. Manage stress and heat-related reactions with meditation. To prevent sleep disturbances, adhere to a regular sleeping schedule. If at all possible, stay away from high temperatures for a long time.
