Cyclone Tej

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is anticipated to experience the indirect ramifications of Cyclone Tej, a developing tropical cyclone located in the Arabian Sea. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has divulged that this meteorological phenomenon will exert its influence on the UAE through the influx of moisture emanating from the sea, primarily affecting the eastern and southern regions of the country. The consequence of this atmospheric activity will manifest in the formation of cumulus clouds, accompanied by precipitation in the form of rain.

As Cyclone Tej takes shape, the NCM’s latest update reveals that it has reached the status of a Category 2 cyclone, boasting wind speeds ranging from 165 to 175 kilometers per hour. Projections indicate that Tej is poised to intensify into a Category 3 cyclone within the next 24 hours, featuring even higher wind speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour. Given the evolving nature of this cyclone, the NCM is vigilantly monitoring the situation around the clock, emphasizing the importance of not propagating unverified information or rumors among residents.

In a contrasting twist, the direct impact of Cyclone Tej is slated to befall the neighboring country of Oman. Oman is bracing for heavy rainfall and flash floods, with the onset of these weather-related disturbances expected on the evening of Sunday, October 22. Specifically, the meteorological authorities in Oman, represented by Oman Meteorology, have forecasted that the cyclone’s initial landfall will occur in the Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates. The most severe effects of the cyclone, in terms of precipitation and wind intensity, are projected to materialize on October 23 and 24.

Recognizing the impending meteorological challenges, the Omani authorities have taken precautionary measures, including declaring a holiday for both public and private sector employees in certain parts of the country, as well as temporarily closing schools. These measures are aimed at minimizing the risks and ensuring the safety of the population during the cyclone’s impact. In light of these developments, the UAE Embassy in Muscat has issued a call to action for Emiratis residing in Oman, urging them to adhere closely to the safety directives issued by local authorities, thus emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of this weather event.
