US closes $1.52 billion loan to revive nuclear facility in Michigan

The United States said on Monday that it has closed a $1.52 billion loan to revive Holtec’s nuclear reactor in Palisades, Michigan. A senior official in the Biden administration stated that the plant’s reopening would take up to two years, longer than the firm had anticipated.
As concerns about climate change grow as the country’s power demand rises, President Joe Biden’s administration has advocated for a tripling of nuclear power capacity in the United States. Some commercial reactors that have been closed for decommissioning, such as the one at Three Mile Island, the scene of the worst nuclear catastrophe in American history, may return as part of the push. Nuclear plant restarts are exceedingly difficult and costly processes that have never been completed in this nation before.
The White House climate adviser, Ali Zaidi, told reporters over the phone that “Palisades is a climate comeback story” and that nuclear power creates well-paying union jobs.Funding for nonprofit electric cooperatives to buy Palisades power was included in the $1.52 billion loan from the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office. Wolverine and Hoosier Energy, two power cooperatives, will get more than $1.3 billion in public investment, according to Deputy U.S. Energy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small.
Virtually emissions-free power from nuclear reactors is valuable as demand for electricity increases for the first time in decades due to the development of cryptocurrencies, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that the United States has not decided where to deposit radioactive nuclear waste indefinitely.According to the senior U.S. official, Palisades may take “a couple of years to turn back on” because it still needs regulatory approval. Holtec has projected a resurgence for the fourth quarter of the following year.
A Holtec spokesman, Patrick O’Brien, stated that Palisades was scheduled for “repower” in October 2025 or later.
But even after closing in 2022, the plant still need maintenance. Preliminary inspection results, according to the U.S. nuclear authority, “found a substantial number of steam generator tubes with indications that require additional investigation and/or repair,” as reported this month. A nuclear power plant’s steam generators are delicate parts that need careful upkeep.
