A rising number of old individuals with hearing misfortune will not wear a portable hearing assistant – prompting a more serious gamble of creating persistent sicknesses like dementia and Alzheimer’s, a top Emirati specialist said.

According to Dr. Ahmad Al Shamsi, a seasoned otologist and cochlear implant surgeon at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) Abu Dhabi, regular users of hearing aids are less likely to experience serious health issues or end in death.

One of my colleagues recently called to tell me that her father could not hear even with a hearing aid. His father used to have a hearing aid, but he stopped using it, and even with it, he still has trouble understanding anything.

Dr. Shamsi stated, “Having a cochlear implant is the only option at this time.” The doctor mentioned that a 75-year-old man with hearing loss was isolating himself and refusing to leave his room because he couldn’t hear anyone talking in another case. Confinement, infections, demise According to Dr. Shamsi, chair of the otolaryngology – head and neck surgery (ENT) division, hearing loss can lead to social isolation if left untreated. “Envision you are in a room, and everybody is talking, however you see nothing as a result of your hearing misfortune.

Additionally, you do not wish to wear a hearing aid. What will this patient go through? That individual will gradually begin separating. Isolation reduces brain activity and cognitive capacity, both of which will contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

He additionally brought up the discoveries of numerous examinations zeroed in on hearing misfortune in grown-ups and the older. As per a review distributed in The Lancet Sound Life span diary, customary listening device use was connected to bring down dangers of mortality.

In addition, experts from Johns Hopkins Medicine conducted a study and found that mild hearing loss doubled the risk of dementia. “In several instances, their children have informed me that their aging parents have even begun to forget things as an indication of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Shamsi told Khaleej Times that isolation causes dementia and Alzheimer’s, which can lead to trauma and even death.

“I don’t look old, I can hear” Dr. Shamsi said that most elderly people don’t want to use hearing aids because people will think they’re too old. “These issues occur in elderly people who enjoy sitting down to converse with others and lead active lives but suddenly realize they have hearing loss. They can only see their lips moving and cannot comprehend anything. They feel it psychologically. Dr. Shamsi advised elderly people in need to overcome their stigma and use hearing aids. It will improve their quality of life and enable them to live their lives normally.

They won’t be embarrassed to sit in a room and take part in the conversation. Dr. Shamsi made the point that people with hearing loss who are embarrassed to wear hearing aids will still be affected at work. They won’t be able to comprehend what is being discussed in the meeting or be productive. Hearing aids are essential for all ages, even those in need.

“Indeed, even youngsters with sensorineural hearing misfortune will have discourse delay on the off chance that they don’t utilize a listening device. Their entire life is affected, including their school days,” he emphasized. Costly hearing impairment The World Health Organization warns that by 2050, approximately one in four people worldwide will have some kind of hearing loss.

The health care industry, educational support costs, productivity losses, and societal costs of untreated hearing loss total $980 billion annually. A large number of people with hearing loss will have an economic impact if they are not treated.

Dr. Shamsi emphasized that hearing loss must be detected as soon as possible. He stated that public hospitals in the UAE are providing free access to all available treatments. “There are hearing aids, surgeries, medical care, and even cochlear implants, which are the most expensive treatment but are free for everyone at government hospitals.”
