The United States government has taken possession of nearly one million barrels of Iranian crude oil, purportedly intended for China, as per recently unveiled legal documents and an official announcement by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday. This marks a historic development as it signifies the first-ever criminal resolution involving a company that has breached sanctions by facilitating the unlawful sale and transport of Iranian oil, as stated by the DOJ.
The oil in question, totaling over 980,000 barrels, was allegedly dispatched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an organization designated as a foreign terrorist entity by the United States. The DOJ has accused various entities affiliated with Iran’s IRGC and the IRGC-Qods Force of being part of a covert operation aimed at camouflaging the oil’s origin and conducting its illegal sale to China, as outlined in court documents.
Furthermore, the court filings also present allegations that the proceeds from these oil sales have been utilized to fund a wide spectrum of nefarious activities associated with the IRGC. These activities encompass the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, support for terrorist organizations, and both domestic and international human rights violations.
In a significant development earlier this year, the company responsible for operating the vessel transporting the seized oil, Empire Navigation, pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The IRCG faced substantial penalties, amounting to nearly $2.5 million, and received a three-year sentence of corporate probation. Additionally, the company’s vessel, Suez Rajan Limited, undertook the task of bringing the contraband oil to the United States, incurring substantial expenses during the voyage, as confirmed by the DOJ.
This recent action by the US government underscores its commitment to enforcing sanctions and combating illicit activities conducted by organizations like the IRGC. It signifies a significant step in curbing the flow of funds to entities engaged in activities that pose a threat to international peace and security, particularly in the realms of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
