Teen Insta holders: Parents afraid of kids getting over restrictions

According to some experts, the new initiative might be a “bandage solution” to a difficult problem.

The software company Meta’s decision to launch teen accounts with privacy and parental settings has been met with cautious hope by parents in the United Arab Emirates.

Instagram revealed on Tuesday that it will be introducing new settings that will automatically turn millions of teen accounts private and limit the types of content those accounts may access.

Father of a 13-year-old, Zoltan Rendes of Dubai-based SunMoney Solar Group, stated, “It is a vital move in the right way.” It is like the Wild West out there right now, where anything goes. Strong laws are desperately needed to protect young people from objectionable content, con artists, and extreme ideas.

The official Instagram page claims that the new upgrades are intended to improve teens’ experience by giving them access to a new feature that “lets them select themes they want to see more of” and to provide parents “peace of mind that their teens are safe.”

Teenagers in the UAE, meanwhile, claimed they did not understand the purpose of the modification. Rhea Nihalani, 16, stated, “I see the idea behind it but it also rubs me the wrong way when I see youngsters as young as 6 or 7 accessing social media.” “I do not believe the new rule will have the desired effect. I believe that restricting and monitoring what teenagers can access and post on the internet to those who are at least 15 years old only serves to encourage them to use it more recklessly after that point.

“Band-aid fix”
After years of pressure from many groups to take greater action to protect teenagers, Meta made the decision. Omer Khan, the CEO and founder of the mental health website Helply, called the decision a “band-aid solution” to a difficult problem.

According to him, “from a psychological standpoint, offering kids more control over their privacy settings can limit their exposure to bullying, unsolicited messages, and hazardous content.”
But this does not entirely address the underlying problems. Teens may yet feel the need to compare themselves to others, even in the presence of privacy settings. This is a major factor in mental health problems. Seeing curated versions of their peers’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Simply reducing exposure to certain content won’t address this deeper psychological issue inherent in the nature of social media itself,” he added.

Misha Akbar, the founder of Sama Health, said that as a mental health practitioner and mother to a teenager, she took the news with a “grain of salt”. “While these tools are a positive step, they’re just one piece of the puzzle,” she said. “As parents, we must go beyond just setting restrictions and have honest conversations with our teens about how social media impacts their mental health. It’s about giving them the knowledge and confidence to navigate their online lives.”
