US sanctions Israeli gathering for going after Gaza help escorts

The Biden administration asserts that the Israeli government is “responsible” for safeguarding humanitarian trucks traveling to Gaza.

A “violent extremist” Israeli group has been sanctioned by the United States for obstructing and causing damage to humanitarian aid convoys headed to Gaza as the threat of famine grows in the besieged Palestinian territory. On Friday, President Joe Biden’s administration targeted Tzav 9, a group whose stated objective is to prevent aid from entering Gaza. It said that the group looted aid trucks and set them on fire.

“The arrangement of helpful help is crucial to keeping the compassionate emergency in Gaza from deteriorating and to relieving the gamble of starvation,” the Division of State said in a proclamation. “It is the responsibility of the Israeli government to guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian convoys traveling through Israel and the West Bank on their way to Gaza. We will not tolerate sabotage or acts of violence against this vital humanitarian aid.”

A day after Israel Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said that far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir tried to stop law enforcement from protecting aid convoys to Gaza, the sanctions were announced. Right-wing Israelis have been protesting and blocking roads for months to prevent aid from reaching Gaza, which is suffocated by the Israeli blockade. The efforts have made it harder for the territory to get the help it so desperately needs. The protesters have increased their attacks on convoys in recent weeks, particularly as they travel through the occupied West Bank.

The US State Department attributed the attack, which occurred last month in the Hebron Hills, to Tzav 9, to the burning of two aid trucks. The sanctions prevent the group from acquiring assets in the United States and prohibit most American citizens from transacting with them. They were put in place as a result of an executive order (EO) that Vice President Biden issued. This EO established the legal framework for US sanctions against individuals and organizations that were “undermining peace, security, and stability” in the occupied West Bank. Last week, the Biden organization conjured a similar request to endorse the Place of extreme peril, a Palestinian equipped gathering.

Ben-Gvir and the ultranationalist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, two Israeli officials who have been accused of abusing Palestinians in the West Bank, have resisted sanctions from Washington. This month, US Congressperson Chris Van Hollen encouraged the Biden organization to utilize the chief request to target Smotrich.

“In my view, Smotrich ought to be likely to be sanctioned under this EO,” Van Hollen said. The money server has kept charges owed to the Palestinian Power, and in Spring, he announced 800 hectares (1,977 sections of land) in the West Bank to be Israeli state land. “You have this individual whose expressed objective is for basically Israel to assume control over the whole West Bank,” Van Hollen told the Middle for American Advancement, a liberal research organization.

A majority rule government for the Bedouin World Currently (Day break), a promotion association that suggested endorsing Tzav 9, invited Friday’s actions and approached Biden to target substances and people that help store and empower the gathering too. Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, director of research for Israel-Palestine at DAWN, said in a statement, “Recent revelations that Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir ordered police to stand down and allow Tzav 9 to block humanitarian aid convoys show how this despicable strategy of starvation is coordinated from young settler activists all the way up to the highest levels of the Israeli government.”

“The US should next impose sanctions on Ben-Gvir and not continue to ignore the Israeli government’s involvement in these crimes.” Rights advocates also urged Washington to exert pressure on Israel to lift the Gaza siege.

This week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Israel has taken “important steps” to remove obstacles preventing aid from reaching Gaza, but that it “can and must do more.” He stated on Tuesday at a Gaza aid conference in Jordan, “It is crucial to speed up the inspection of trucks and reduce backlogs,” “to provide greater clarity on – and shorten the list of prohibited goods,” and “to increase visas for aid workers and to process them more quickly.” Blinken likewise asked “more clear, more successful channels” to shield compassionate laborers from military activities.
