Israeli military to have struck a central Lebanon Hezbollah site

During Israel’s war on Gaza, the Israeli military has claimed to have struck a Hezbollah facility deep inside Lebanese territory. This is the latest in a string of strikes between the two sides.

Israel’s military claimed in a Telegram post on Wednesday that the attack on Tuesday night targeted one of the Lebanese group’s air defense systems near the central village of Janta, about 79 kilometers (49 miles) from Beirut’s capital.

This was a deeper than usual incursion into Lebanese territory, where the majority of attacks have been limited to the south up until this point. According to the report, Israel’s air force attacked a weapons depot in the Kfar Kila area and a Hezbollah air defense site in parallel overnight strikes. Al Jazeera’s Assed Baig said that Israeli artillery, drone, and missile attacks also hit Yaroun, Haddatha, Hula, Toulin, and al-Nabi Shayth in the Bekaa Valley. He reported from the southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun.

Israel originally completed an air strike focusing on a Hezbollah vehicle near the Syria-Lebanon verge on Tuesday, killing no less than two individuals, as indicated by a Syrian conflict screen.

On the condition of anonymity, a Hezbollah official told The Associated Press that one of the victims was a former bodyguard of Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s leader. He was later given the name Yasser Nimr Qarnabsh by Hezbollah. Israeli police say that in retaliation, Hezbollah fired rockets at an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights, killing two people.

The victims, according to Israel’s rescue service, were civilians. Baig stated, “The fear is there could really be an escalation.” “Hezbollah has been very clear that this front is in support of the Palestinians in Gaza,” and the organization has stated that it will continue to “target the Israeli military as long as there isn’t a ceasefire.”

“We will fight until it is necessary,” As the war has progressed and the number and intensity of firefights across the Lebanon-Israel border have increased, tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have increased. Hezbollah has repeatedly stated that once fighting in Gaza ends and the war is over, it will stop attacking northern Israel.

The leader of the armed Lebanese group, Nasrallah, said in a televised address on Wednesday that Israel has achieved “no victory” in Gaza and that the entire world understands that it cannot defeat Hamas, which is why there have been more calls for a ceasefire. Nasrallah stated, “Hamas is negotiating on behalf of the entire axis of resistance – whatever it agrees to we will agree to,” during negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“They update us and get a kick out of the chance to get our thoughts” he proceeded. “We advise them to settle on the choice since we don’t believe anybody should say our front is worn out … we will keep battling until required”. Top Israeli officials have also promised to start a full-blown war in Lebanon if there isn’t a diplomatic solution that involves Hezbollah pulling back from the border.

Sultan Barakat, a professor of conflict and humanitarian studies at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University of the Qatar Foundation, said that although there have been nearly daily attacks between Hezbollah and Israel since the beginning of the Gaza war, they are still part of a policy of deterrence toward one another.

Barakat stated to Al Jazeera, “Israel has demonstrated to Hezbollah what it can do by attacking Gaza, and Israeli ministers have repeatedly threatened to do to Lebanon what they have done to Gaza.”

He continued, “At the same time, Hezbollah must deter Israel from taking it any further by demonstrating its ability to gather intelligence deep into Israel, identify targets, and reach those targets.”

Since October, Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon have killed at least 543 people, and Hezbollah and other armed groups in Lebanon have killed at least 21 people in Israel in attacks. Due to the fighting, border towns on both sides have seen the evacuation of tens of thousands of Israeli and Lebanese civilians.
