Algerian state radio issued a statement on Sunday announcing that it will immediately begin supplying Lebanon with fuel for its power plants. This follows a statement made by Lebanon’s electricity company the day before that it had exhausted its supplies.
Since the 1990s, Lebanon has not had continuous power, and cash transfers to Lebanon’s state electricity company, Electricité du Liban (EDL), to cover ongoing losses have added tens of billions of dollars to the country’s enormous public debt. On Saturday, EDL announced a complete power outage across the country, including at vital facilities like the airport.
The power supply would gradually resume once new fuel supplies were secured, either through a swap agreement with Iraq or from other sources, it stated at the time. There were no specifics provided in the Algerian state radio statement.
