German government

As it begins to develop alternatives to fossil fuels for a significant portion of its industry, the government of Germany adopted on Wednesday a strategy for the import of hydrogen in order to assist in securing a sustainable supply of energy. If hydrogen is produced in a green manner through electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, the transition to a carbon-free economy can be aided.

The strategy lays out where Germany will import hydrogen, how trade will be organized and certified, where transport and value chains will be built in ports and pipeline systems, and more. Its purpose is to let potential suppliers know that their proposals are welcome.

A statement from the Economy Ministry stated, “The import strategy is a major building block of Germany’s hydrogen policy and complements the government’s involvement in the domestic market ramp-up.”

To achieve its goal of being climate neutral, Germany anticipates that it will require between 95 and 120 terawatt hours (TWh) of hydrogen annually by 2030 and 360 to 500 TWh by 2045, with imports accounting for 50 to 70 percent of those requirements.

According to the figures, Germany’s total power demand for 2030 would be met by hydrogen-based energy consumption in 2045. Norway, Great Britain, and Denmark were initially anticipated to deliver either green hydrogen or a so-called blue variety made with natural gas in a process that captures and stores CO2 released during production.

Energy industry bunch BDEW, remarking on the system, said that it expected to focus on focuses on that guaranteed the quick appearance of hydrogen and cut down costs to serious levels.
