Surveys close in Iran’s snap official political race

The race to succeed Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May, has four candidates. After Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash, Iranians voted for a new president. At a time when public dissatisfaction was growing, they chose from a tightly controlled group of four candidates who were loyal to the supreme leader. After a series of extensions on Friday to allow people to vote, the polls closed at approximately 12 a.m. local time (20:30 GMT), with Iranian officials urging a high turnout.

The current war between Israel and Iranian ally Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran’s first direct attack on Israel in April, and increased Western pressure on Iran over its nuclear program coincide with the snap election. Even though the Islamic Republic’s policies are unlikely to change significantly as a result of the election, the outcome could have an impact on who succeeds Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s 85-year-old supreme leader who has been in power since 1989.

A gathering of six researchers and six legal scholars lined up with Khamenei vets competitors. Six out of an initial pool of 80 were approved. Two competitors thus exited. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the parliament speaker and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) air force, and Saeed Jalili, a former nuclear negotiator who worked for four years in Khamenei’s office, are prominent among the remaining hardliners.

The sole relative moderate, Masoud Pezeshkian, is devoted to Iran’s religious rule, however advocates armistice with the West, financial change, social progression and political pluralism. Participation is crucial. Due to the hot weather and the fact that Friday was a weekend in Iran, many Iranians did not vote earlier. In previous elections, many voters reportedly cast their ballots at night.

Over the past four years, voter turnout has decreased as a majority of young people resent political and social restrictions. Zeina Khodr of Al Jazeera reported from Tehran that voter turnout is crucial to the outcome because a higher turnout would give the sole reformist candidate a better chance. “The fact that there is a split vote among the conservatives indicates that there is a real possibility of a second round.

The attendance is also important to the organization. Khamenei required a high turnout to counterbalance an authenticity emergency fuelled by open discontent over monetary difficulty and checks on political and social opportunity. After casting his vote, Khamenei stated on state television, “The Islamic Republic’s durability, strength, dignity, and reputation depend on the presence of people.”

“High turnout is an unmistakable need.” According to Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi, the country had nearly 60,000 voting centers and 90,000 “voting points,” with over 300 voting centers outside the country. Outside of the country, more than 61 million people are eligible to vote. Blended sentiments Tehran’s streets were filled with mixed feelings throughout the voting process. “The political decision can be valuable for individuals, particularly individuals who are searching for the assistance or are hoping to ensure their future,” Maria Jaafary told Al Jazeera.

“I don’t have significant assumptions from these races on the grounds that in the order of the public authority here, the president isn’t the key chief,” Amir, another citizen, said. The final result, based on manual counting of ballots, is expected to be announced in two days, though preliminary figures may be released sooner.

On the first Friday following the announcement of the election result, a run-off between the top two candidates must be held if no candidate receives at least 50% plus one vote from all ballots cast, including blank votes.

Three up-and-comers are hardliners and one is a position of safety similar to moderate, supported by the reformist group that has to a great extent been sidelined in Iran as of late. Since Khamenei is in charge of all major state matters, the country’s nuclear program and support for militia groups in the Middle East are unlikely to see significant policy shifts under the next president.

However, the president is in charge of running the government on a day-to-day basis and has the ability to influence Iran’s foreign and domestic policy. After the United States reneged on Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with six world powers, all four candidates have pledged to revive the faltering economy, which has been plagued by mismanagement, state corruption, and sanctions that have been reimposed since 2018.

On X, Iranians have used the hashtag #ElectionCircus a lot in recent weeks. Some activists at home and abroad have called for a boycott of the election, claiming that a high turnout would legitimize the Islamic Republic.
