In a historic development, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman engaged in their first conversation since the restoration of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The call, facilitated by a China-brokered agreement that marked the end of a seven-year period of hostility between Tehran and Riyadh, centered on addressing the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The conversation between these leaders unfolded against a backdrop of escalating tensions, as Israel had recently launched airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to a deadly attack by Palestinian Hamas militants within its borders. Raisi and the Saudi crown prince used their dialogue to emphasize the pressing necessity of putting an end to what they deemed “war crimes against Palestine,” as reported by Iranian state media.

Prince Mohammed, representing Saudi Arabia, affirmed his country’s commitment to seeking peaceful resolutions by actively engaging with international and regional stakeholders to quell the ongoing escalation in the region. Saudi state news agency SPA conveyed his unequivocal stance on refusing to target civilians in any form.

The resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran has been a pivotal turning point in regional dynamics, especially in the Middle East. The prolonged hostility between these two major players had fueled conflicts across the region, from Yemen to Syria, and posed a significant threat to the stability and security of the Gulf. This agreement, brokered by China, has the potential to de-escalate tensions and open the door to cooperation on various regional and international issues.

In the context of the ongoing tensions, a senior U.S. State Department official underscored Washington’s unwavering support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas. The United States, as a staunch ally of Israel, maintained continuous communication with Saudi leadership throughout the situation. Furthermore, the U.S. was actively encouraging its partners with channels of communication or relations with Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, or Iran to exert their influence in encouraging Hamas to cease its attacks, secure the release of hostages, prevent Hezbollah’s involvement, and keep Iran from further exacerbating the situation.

This conversation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, despite their historical rivalries, highlights the importance of diplomacy in resolving long-standing conflicts and regional tensions. As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, the international community will be closely watching for further developments and signs of progress towards peace and stability.
