UAE’s Mandatory Job Loss Insurance Scheme Gains Over 5.73 Million Subscribers as Deadline Nears

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed a substantial surge in the enrollment of its mandatory job loss insurance scheme, with over 5.73 million employees becoming subscribers. The announcement, made on a recent Tuesday, has underscored the widespread adoption of this safety net program.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has disclosed that out of these 5.73 million subscribers, a significant portion, numbering 5.6 million, hails from the private sector, while the remaining individuals are employed within various federal government departments.

With the enrollment deadline looming on the horizon, the MoHRE has issued a stern reminder to residents of the UAE that October 1 is the cutoff date for subscribing to this indispensable scheme.

Failure to adhere to this timeline will result in a Dh400 fine, a penalty that is likely to act as a deterrent for procrastinators. Nevertheless, it is essential to recognize that certain categories of individuals remain exempt from participation in this scheme. These include investors who own and manage their own businesses, domestic workers, temporary employees, minors under the age of 18, and retirees who receive pensions and have already secured new employment.

The MoHRE has left no stone unturned in urging eligible employees to promptly register for the program. The primary motivation behind this push is the avoidance of fines, but equally significant are the manifold advantages that this scheme has to offer.

It functions as a cost-effective safety net, poised to provide financial support to employees in the event of job loss. This security net is categorically divided into two segments to ensure fairness and equity.

The first category caters to those with a basic salary of Dh16,000 or less. For these individuals, the insurance premium stands at a modest Dh5 per month, with the maximum monthly compensation capped at Dh10,000. The second category encompasses individuals with a basic salary exceeding Dh16,000, subjecting them to a slightly higher insurance premium of Dh10 per month. However, they enjoy a more generous monthly compensation cap, set at Dh20,000.

To ensure that the insurance serves its intended purpose, beneficiaries must have subscribed to the scheme for at least 12 consecutive months before being eligible to claim compensation. It’s worth noting that the right to compensation becomes void if the beneficiary cancels their residency and departs from the country or secures new employment elsewhere.

In summary, the UAE’s mandatory job loss insurance scheme has garnered an impressive number of subscribers, underlining its importance as a safeguard against unforeseen employment challenges. With the enrollment deadline imminent, eligible employees are strongly encouraged to seize this opportunity and protect their financial well-being. This initiative not only mitigates the impact of job loss but also contributes to the overall economic resilience of the nation.
