It was revealed on Saturday that the UAE’s Barakh Nuclear Energy Plant’s third reactor has officially been connected to the nation’s electrical grid.
Adding another 1,400 megawatts of electricity with zero carbon emissions to the national grid through Unit 3 will be a significant step in ensuring the nation’s energy security and sustainability in the fight against climate change.
Barakah is advancing the decarbonization of the power industry and is a crucial part of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy. Units 1 and 2 are now in commercial operation, producing clean electricity every minute of the day, and Unit 3 will soon begin commercial operations.
The UAE’s clean energy system, which consists of a number of low-carbon technologies, is significantly strengthened by the nuclear industry as a whole, ensuring the national grid’s dependability, effectiveness, and resilience for at least the next 60 years.
“Connecting Unit 3 to the UAE transmission grid adds thousands more megawatts of clean electricity to power all aspects of society, eliminates the need to burn $4 billion worth of gas that can be diverted for export, and provides many companies in the UAE with a distinctive competitive advantage through Clean Energy Certification,” said Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, managing director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec).

After the grid connection (PAT), Unit 3 will go through the Power Ascension Testing procedure, which involves gradually increasing power levels. The procedure will be continuously observed and tested while following all national and local legal requirements and the highest levels of international safety, quality, and security until the maximum amount of electricity is produced.
The four Barakah units will eventually provide 25% of the UAE’s energy requirements, making them the nation’s greatest source of readily available clean electricity.
The facility serves as an example of how nuclear energy projects may be executed successfully, safely, and affordably in order to combat rising carbon emissions. Additionally, nuclear power is allowing the UAE to export high-value LNG fuels, boosting the amount of national funds available for foreign investment to promote economic diversification.
