Marijuana contains two active chemicals that researchers claim have medicinal applications.

1 Can be used to treat glaucoma
The use of marijuana can be used to treat and prevent ocular glaucoma, a condition that increases pressure in the eyeball, damaging the optic nerve and causing loss of vision.

Marijuana use can prevent epileptic seizures, said a study published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Cannabinoids, like the active ingredients of marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as THC), control seizures by binding to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation.

Marijuana may be able to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, say scientists at the Scripps Research Institute.
The study, published in the Journal of Molecular Pharmaceutics, found that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, slows the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that produces them.
These plaques are what kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer’s.
