Anyone with a valid driving licence in the UAE is required to abide by all applicable traffic laws. The Ministerial Resolution, which sets guidelines for the “Black Traffic Points” system, governs traffic infractions by holders of driving licences in the United Arab Emirates. According to this, significant offences may result in the imposition of black points ranging from four to 24.
The black points are effectively deductions from an individual’s driving record for infractions including speeding, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, causing accidents, causing injuries or fatalities as a result of reckless driving, and so on. The maximum number of such points that any holder of a driver’s licence may have is 24.
The relevant emirate’s traffic court has the authority to order the suspension or seizure of a driver’s licence for a set length of time if a person accrues 24 black points. Even if there are fewer than 24 black points for some driving infractions, the traffic court may order that the car be impounded.
A driver who participates in pertinent traffic awareness and road safety programmes offered periodically by police departments and other competent authorities in each emirate may request a reduction in points.
