A powerful earthquake struck near the Philippine city of Davao

A strong earthquake struck near the Philippine city of Davao on Sunday, killing a kid, toppled structures and triggering numerous injuries, authorities stated, the most recent in a series of quakes to strike the southern part of the nation in current months.

The magnitude 6.8 quake was just 61 km (38 miles) southwest of Davao on the island of Mindanao, at a depth of 28.2 km, the U.S. Geological Survey stated, modifying down the magnitude from an earlier 6.9.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated there was no tsunami danger from the quake, based upon readily available information.

Vincent Fernandez, the mayor of Matanao town in Davao del Sur province, informed Radio DZMM that a six-year-old woman had passed away after a wall collapsed on her.

Fernandez stated the degree of the damage was not yet clear, however, authorities started moving food, water and tarpaulins, and blankets to assist citizens.

Anthony Allada, a public details officer in Magsaysay Town, stated 14 individuals were hurt, however, none seriously.

“Roadways and structures, consisting of the government office, were damaged and power was out in the town”, he stated.

The area was shaken by 4 huge quakes in October and November, which killed a minimum of 20 individuals.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who is from Davao, remained in the city when the quake struck.

” He is okay. He and his child Kitty remained in their home when the quake struck,” governmental spokesperson Salvador Panelo stated. “First Lady Honeylet was on her ay home when the ground shook. She stated that her automobile was swaying. She is safe.”

A three-story structure collapsed in the town of Padada, in Davao del Sur, the regional catastrophe firm reported.

Authorities stated some individuals were inside the structure, which housed a grocery market, and that a rescue effort was underway.

” I saw the structure when it fell,” Leighton Angcan, a citizen of Padada informed reporters. It was the tallest building here and it was ruined. I saw many individuals running outside.”

Video footage published by users on Twitter revealed overhead electrical wires swaying and showering the street with sparks. Another video revealed water sloshing out of a hotel swimming pool.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated that more damage from the aftershocks could be anticipated.

Numerous strong aftershocks were tape-recorded after the primary trembling, the greatest was a magnitude 5.7 focused just north of General Santos City.

The Philippines rests on the geologically active Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences regular tremblings.
