Felicity Huffman reported to a federal prison to serve her sentence following her conviction in the Operation Varsity Blues scandal.
The Desperate Housewives actress was convicted after she admitted to paying $15,000 to have her daughter’s SAT scores altered. This resulted in her daughter’s scores jumping from 400 to 1420 out of a possible 1600.
The actress reported to a Federal Correction Center in Dublin, California where she will serve 14 days in prison. The courts also ordered her to pay a fine of $30,000 as well as spend 250 hours in community service.
The 56-year old Grammy nominee issued a statement apologizing for her role in the Operation Varsity Blues scandal.
In the statement, she asked for forgiveness from her daughter who she claims did not know about the alteration of her grades.
According to her representative, “Huffman accepted the sentence and was ready to serve her time in prison”.
Huffman was among the list of 50 famous people charged for involvement in the scandal. The scam involved payment of thousands of dollars by wealthy parents to boost the chances of their children getting admission into elite colleges, such as Yale and Stanford.
The scandal involved paying other people to take tests on behalf of their children, pay off test administrators to allow cheating, and paying off coaches to identify their children as athletes despite not having any athletic abilities.
Some of the other famous people charged alongside her include Lori Loughlin, who has pleaded “not guilty” and was released on a $1 million bail, and the prosecutor said that he was seeking a tougher sentence.
The mastermind behind the Operation Varsity Blues scandal, William Rick Singer, also pleaded guilty for his involvement in the scandal.
Singer faces up to 65 years in prison and a fine of up to $1.25 million.
The accused parents faced various charges including money laundering, and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
These charges carry up to a maximum of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000.
