Header tags are a crucial on-page SEO factor since they are used for communicating to search engines what your site is about, the search engine recognizes your header tag as more essential than the rest.

It starts with H1 and works its way down in importance to H2, H3, and more. Such tags will support the page’s purpose or overall theme.

However, you cannot just throw in whatever kind of content you like into such headers. It is essential to use header tags with long-tail and short-tail keywords. As the search engine crawls your website, it will pick up on headers and recognize keywords you’re using as vital.

Purpose of Heading Tags

The primary purpose of categorizing your web content with various headings is to make your design more user-friendly, and people would get a feel regarding your site by reading sub-headings. The H1 tag is an important tag, so when you’re using it on your web page heading, try making it so people will get an idea regarding your website content just through reading your heading. H1 tag must be in a way that describes everything regarding your web page in 1 shot.

Using H1, H2, and H3 Header Tags Properly

While header tags extend to H4, H5, and H6, tags with most SEO value will always be  H1, H2, and H3. You cannot just go and insert header tags anywhere and see results at the end. Header tags have their place on the page and need to be used in proper order starting with your H1.

H1 tag must contain your targeted keywords and ones that relate to the page title and are relevant to your content. H2 tags are subheadings and must contain the same keywords to the H1 tag. H3 is H2’s subheading. Think of these as a hierarchy based on the significance, the above will be more crucial than below.

Take note that it is important that your header tags are grammatically correct and readable. Stuffing H1, H2, and H3 with some keywords won’t help your cause. Google might recognize it and assume that you’re trying to manipulate them and it’s a big NO. It’s recommended that you should use H1 tag per webpage since it must be like a heading in a newspaper and must be structured with a subheading through following the hierarchy of the heading tags.

In previous HTML versions, only a single H1 tag is allowed for designers to use for every web document and what these people did was to use H1 tags for wrapping business logos on the web page, which is crucial for a business web page and begins the primary heading of a web page with H2 tag. However, through the help of HTML’s updated version like HTML5 that enables designers to have different H1 tags on web pages according to the web page design’s requirements.

Heading tags are important for proper on-page SEO of your blog posts.

Excessive use of H3 and H2 tags is a common mistake among new bloggers, yet, here are times that they also skip H2 tags and just use H3 tags.
