Six UNRWA personnel reportedly perished in an Israeli airstrike on a school they manage in central Gaza, according to the UN organization for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa).
18 people were killed in the attack on Wednesday on the al-Jaouni school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which is home to thousands of displaced Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Civil Defence organization in Gaza.
The Israeli military declared that it executed a “precise strike on terrorists” who were preparing assaults from the school.
Three Unrwa employees and nine members of Hamas’ armed wing were among the nine people slain, according to claims made by the military on Thursday.According to Unrwa, Israeli officials had neither previously alerted the organization to the names released by the military, nor had the Israeli military asked for a list of the personnel that were slain.
UN Secretary General António Guterres earlier said, “What is occurring in Gaza is simply intolerable,” denouncing the strike.
He posted on X, the former Twitter platform, saying, “These severe violations of international humanitarian law need to end now.”
Danny Danon, Israel’s UN ambassador, criticized Guterres harshly.
“It is abhorrent that the UN persists in denouncing Israel for its legitimate battle against terrorists, while Hamas persists in utilizing women and children as human shields,” he declared.
Israel, the UK, and other nations have outlawed Hamas as a terrorist organization, and the organization has denied utilizing civilian buildings like schools for military objectives.
After Hamas launched an enormous onslaught on southern Israel on October 7, during which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken as captives back to Gaza, Israeli forces began a campaign to eliminate the group.
Since then, more than 41,110 people have died in Gaza, according to the health ministry operated by Hamas in the region.
