On Tuesday tech meet, Qualcomm has unveiled its newest SoC addition Snapdragon 855 processor to the world. The new generation smartphone processor will run all 5G smartphones in the US next year. The chip was launched at a Qualcomm event in Hawaii, and the key feature of this includes the 5G SnapdragonX50 modem for phones that aids in connecting to 5G wireless networks with a speed of “multi-gigabit” mobile data speeds which is 50 to 100 times faster than the 4G network.
The new 855 SoC will feature the company’s fourth generation, multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine that comes with three times improved AI performance, compared to its previous generation. Qualcomm also mentioned that the new chip would also feature the world’s first Computer Vision (CV) ISP to help phones recognise faces and objects, and powers the new video capture features. The Snapdragon 855 chip will support Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor named as “Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor”. This sensor can read users’ fingerprint through the glass screen of the device.
Qualcomm said in its blog post that “This is the only mobile solution that can accurately detect fingerprints through numerous contaminants. Furthermore, this technology enables sleek, cutting-edge form factors while distinguishing itself from alternatives with higher levels of security and accuracy.” The new 5G ready SoC is built on the 7nm design, which makes it more efficient and powerful than the other Snapdragon predecessors. For details, Apple’s Bionic chip and Huawei’s Kirin 980 are too built on 7nm design. The Snapdragon 855 chip is also expected to improve mobile photography exceptionally for the new generation flagship smartphones. As for the biggest market rival of Snapdragon, Apple would wait until 2020 to release its first series of 5G phone, reported by Bloomberg.
