Sotheby’s auction house will be launching an online auction on the 24th of September to raise funds for the Center, which is an L.G.B.T.Q. organization in the West Village of New York City. On sale would be artwork from the personal art collection of the late Keith Haring, who was known for his graffiti-like figures that were painted in very bright colors. Aaron B David, an avid art collector, is extremely excited about the upcoming auction saying that having the chance to add some of the late Keith Haring’s fantastic artwork to his extensive art collection is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The art collection to be auctioned out includes artwork by Basquiat, Lee Quinones, Warhol, Futura 2000, Kenny Sharf, and many others. Aaron B David already owns many artworks from the likes of Basquiat and Warhol. All the proceeds of this auction, which has been titled “Dear Keith”, will be going to the Center, and the prices of the artwork have been made very affordable with some of the pieces being priced at just a hundred dollars. Aaron B David goes on to say that he is yet to obtain some of Keith Haring’s work and it will be a welcomed addition to his collection.
This event would be quite a meaningful and emotional event as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the passing away of Keith Haring. Gil Vazquez, who is the acting director of the Keith Haring foundation, said that the Center shares the same values that Keith imbibed, which are community, empowerment, and supporting the youths. She said the foundation had not been able to address the concerns that their founder had wanted to, but they are confident now that this is the time to finally step up and play a huge part in these issues in the community. She said it even felt like Keith himself had rallied his friends to make the art just for this occasion.
Keith Haring passed away in the year 1990 due to complications from AIDS, but before he died, he did spend most of his life and artistic career championing the cause of community and pushing for greater development for the youths. He made sure to create a lasting legacy by creating the Keith Haring Foundation just before he died and the Foundation continues to touch the lives of people and this Sotheby’s auction is only just another means by which the Keith Haring Foundation seeks to enrich the lives of people.
