According to BMC, Mumbai city received 140.5 mm rain from 8 am on August 3 to 3 am on August 4. The Eastern and Western Suburbs recorded 84.77 mm and 79.27 mm of rainfall respectively.
BMC issued suitable warnings and advisories to all coastal security agencies and disaster management department. It has also appealed to all offices and other establishments, except emergency services, to remain shut today.
The city corporation has also put on alert fire brigade, pumping stations and operating staff at temporarily installed 299 pumping machines.
The local trains, a lifeline for Mumbai’s 20 million residents, have been stopped in the city and all offices in the city, except emergency services will stay closed today. The financial capital and a few neighbouring district are on red alert for “extremely heavy rainfall” today and tomorrow. Apart from Mumbai, the alert has been issued for Thane, Pune, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra.
“Stay home! We’ve been monitoring the situation and the @mybmc is working round the clock. Please cooperate and stay home,” Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray tweeted.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen to not venture deep into the Bay of Bengal till August 6 as surface winds with speeds up to 50 kmph will make the sea conditions very rough.
