Work done in shops also
Mehdi Hasan inherited singing. His grandfather Imam Khan was a big artist who used to sing Gandhar, Dhrupad at the Raj Darbar of Mandawa and Lucknow at that time. However, as the economic situation deteriorated, he initially worked at a bicycle shop. Then became a mechanic, but he never let his love for music end.

Got a chance to sing on radio for the first time
In 1957 Mehdi Hasan got his first chance to sing on the radio and after that he did not look back. He used to sing very well with Dhrupad, Khyal, Thumri and Dadra. His first song was ‘Jis Dil Dil Dard’ in the 1962 film ‘Sasural’. Subsequently, in 1964, his Ghazal Gaai was heard in the film ‘Farangi’.
International recognition
Mehdi Hasan got international recognition for the first time by singing the ghazal of Shayar Ahmad Faraj ‘Ranjish only right heart only to hurt’.
