YouTube removed comments against China, calling it ‘error’

Google’s video-sharing platform YouTube said on Tuesday that it was investigated for removing comments against the Chinese Communist Party from its platform, which found that it was caused by a technical error.

Let us know that these comments came after a media report aired in The Verge inspired by complaints from tech entrepreneur Palmer Lucky. Those were deleted immediately.

Lucky, a founder of the virtual reality group Oculus, now with a defense tech firm, tweeted on Monday that – ‘YouTube has removed every comment I have related to Wumao, the Chinese Communist Party’s internet publicity division’ and said This is a new policy of filtering censorship.

YouTube has deleted every comment I ever made about the Wumao (五毛), an internet propaganda division of the Chinese Communist Party. Who at Google decided to censor American comments on American videos hosted in America by an American platform that is already banned in China?

Other Twitter users responded to Lucky’s tweet saying that they too feel that the comments made about the CCP were removed.

YouTube said in a statement that no changes have been made to the policy, and its filters are only designed to remove ‘unwanted, hateful or disturbing comments’ from the platform.

The YouTube spokesperson responded to the complaints by saying that – ‘This seems to be an error in our Enforcement System, and we are investigating it’.

‘Users can report cases to correct the problem and help us improve the product’.
