On Monday, the bombing near a synagogue in Tel Aviv that was described as a terrorist attack by Israeli police and the Shin Bet intelligence agency was claimed by the armed wings of Islamic Jihad and Hamas. According to police at the scene in Israel’s commercial capital, the incident occurred late on Sunday and resulted in the deaths of a man who was carrying the bomb and injuries to a passerby.
According to David Mencer, a spokesperson for the Israeli government, the man was carrying an explosive-laden backpack that exploded “before he managed to reach a more heavily populated area.”
As long as the “occupation’s massacres and assassination policy continue,” the two Palestinian militant groups said in a joint statement that their “martyrdom operations” inside Israel would return to the forefront. This was a reference to Israel’s offensive in Gaza and Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran on July 31.
According to Israeli statistics, the war in Gaza began on October 7 when Hamas gunmen stormed across the border into Israeli communities, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting approximately 250 hostages.
According to the health authorities in the enclave, Israel’s military campaign has since destroyed vast swaths of the Gaza Strip and killed at least 40,000 people. The explosion in Tel Aviv on Sunday occurred about an hour after the U.S. Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, arrived in Tel Aviv to push for a ceasefire in Gaza to end the 10-month war between Israel and Hamas.
Fears of an escalation throughout the region have made it more urgent to reach a ceasefire agreement. After Haniyeh’s assassination, Iran has threatened Israel with retaliation.
