For the second consecutive day, Israel has conducted airstrikes on Iranian-affiliated targets located in the Deir al Zor region of Syria. These military operations unfolded late in the evening, marking a continuation of heightened tensions in the area.
Syrian government sources have reported that the Israeli airstrike occurred at approximately 23:50 p.m. on October 2nd. The attack targeted specific sites associated with Syria’s armed forces in the vicinity of Deir al Zor, resulting in the injury of two soldiers and substantial material damage.
The provocative aggression was attributed to Israeli forces by a Syrian military official.
Furthermore, a London-based organization responsible for monitoring events in Syria reported a powerful explosion in the Katibat Al-Radar area, located on the peak of Harabish Mountain in Deir Ezzor’s countryside. This area is known to host Syrian Air Force facilities and bases utilized by Iranian-backed militias.
Additional explosions were heard near positions held by Iranian militias in the Al-Hamida area near Al-Bokamal, which is situated close to the Syrian-Iraqi border. At present, there is limited information available regarding casualties resulting from these explosions.
It is important to note that Iranian militias have established a substantial presence in these regions bordering Iraq, where their primary activities involve managing and safeguarding shipments of weaponry and personnel originating from Iran. Over the years, Al-Bokamal, in particular, has been repeatedly targeted by suspected Israeli airstrikes.
The Israeli military’s engagement with Iran-linked military targets in Syria commenced in early 2017 and has continued with regularity. Over the span of six years, hundreds of such attacks have been conducted.
These operations primarily target bases and shipments of weaponry intended to bolster Tehran’s influence in Syria and to supply missiles to Hezbollah, a militant proxy of Iran based in Lebanon.
Iran’s involvement in the Syrian civil war dates back to 2011 when it assumed a pivotal role in supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Iran’s contributions included financial and military aid, as well as the deployment of thousands of Afghan and other militias recruited by the Revolutionary Guard. This involvement has significantly shaped the dynamics of the ongoing conflict in the region.
