Israeli forces launched a disturbing incident at Bab as-Silsila, one of the principal entry points to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem, as reported by local sources.
This incident unfolded within a context of heightened security measures imposed by Israeli forces, leading to the eviction of Palestinian worshippers from the Al-Aqsa Mosque and a significant increase in their presence around the site. Notably, this stringent security posture effectively restricted access to the mosque for Palestinians below the age of 50, with the primary objective of facilitating the entry of Israeli settlers as part of their observance of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
On the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, a considerable number of ultranationalist Israelis made an incursion into the Al-Aqsa courtyard via the Morocco Gate, under the protective shield of Israeli troops, as reported by news outlet Al-Mayadeen.
The Jerusalem Islamic Endowments Department confirmed that the Israeli military was actively engaged in clearing the compound to make way for the settler incursion. Israeli settler groups had been vociferously advocating for unrestricted access to the compound during Rosh Hashanah celebrations, as this location holds great significance for Jews and is known to them as the Temple Mount.
In response to the harassment and intrusions by Israeli settlers, a group of Muslim worshippers had assembled at the holy site immediately following dawn prayers.
It was during this confrontation that Israeli forces reportedly “physically assaulted and beat up three worshippers,” including an elderly man and an elderly woman, near Bab as-Silsila, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
These individuals had objected to an Israeli settler sounding a horn at the entrance to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Furthermore, two men were detained inside the compound and subsequently transferred to undisclosed locations, as reported by Al-Mayadeen.
Video footage capturing Israeli settlers touring the Al-Aqsa Mosque courtyard began circulating on various social media platforms, underscoring the volatility of the situation and the tense environment surrounding one of the most sensitive and sacred sites in the region.
