Biden’s Urgent Message to Netanyahu: Israel-U.S. Relations

President Joe Biden’s meeting with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog at the White House was accompanied by a clear message to Israeli leaders: halt the proposed judicial overhaul legislation. In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, senior commentator Thomas Friedman summarized Biden’s plea, stating, “Please stop now. Don’t pass anything this important without a broad consensus.”

The President expressed his concerns to Netanyahu and Herzog, warning them of the potential irreversible damage to Israel’s democracy and its relationship with the United States.

Israel’s National Security Adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, denied reports of an ultimatum from Biden, clarifying that Netanyahu had briefed the President on the progress of the legislation and expressed a commitment to seek broad consensus during the summer Knesset break.

However, the underlying message from Biden remains clear: rushing through significant legislative changes without broad support can have far-reaching consequences.

Biden underscored the importance of Israel’s vibrant democracy during the ongoing protests, where thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets. The President emphasized that preserving Israel’s democratic institutions is fundamental to maintaining a strong bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

The phone call between Biden and Netanyahu preceding Herzog’s visit marked their first conversation since March, reflecting a thaw in the strained relationship. Both leaders agreed to meet later this year in the United States.

However, concerns within Biden’s Democratic Party regarding Israel’s policies have sparked discussions about reassessing the U.S.-Israel relationship. While no formal reassessment talks are currently taking place, commentators, including Friedman, have called for a necessary reevaluation to prevent any further deterioration.

The urgency of Biden’s message underscores the significance he places on the relationship between the two countries.

The proposed judicial overhaul legislation has raised concerns about its potential impact on Israeli democracy and the partnership between Israel and the U.S. Biden’s call for a pause in the legislative process is rooted in a desire to prevent lasting damage and protect the shared values that have historically underpinned the bilateral relationship.

As the situation evolves, both Israel and the U.S. will navigate the delicate balance of addressing domestic concerns and maintaining a strong alliance. The outcome of this delicate dance will shape the trajectory of Israel-U.S. relations in the coming months and have broader implications for the stability of the region.
