The European auxiliary of Russia’s VTB (VTBR.MM) is changing its name after its parent would not permit it to work under the brand, a leader told Reuters.
The Frankfurt-based bank, previously ring-fenced by controllers because of approvals and in liquidation since last year, will from this point forward be known as OWH SE, said Forthcoming Hellwig, the CEO of VTB’s Europe center.
Before Russia attacked Ukraine, VTB in Europe pulled in huge number of German savers with its somewhat exorbitant loan fees and showcased itself as a backer of Frankfurt’s ice hockey group, the Lions.
However, after the conflict started, savers pulled out their cash, bringing about a bank run and provoking controllers to deal with the surge. They took control in April 2022 after sanctions were forced and the bank was cordoned off from Russia.
VTB still formally possesses the European auxiliary, and Hellwig said he reached the bank’s Russia base camp to get consent to go on under the name while a permitting understanding ran its course. VTB declined.
OWH begins from a past emphasis of the moneylender, Ost-West Handeslbank.
VTB in Russia didn’t promptly answer demands for input.
The liquidation cycle is probably going to go on for certain years, yet the bank has arrived at a significant achievement, Miro Zadro, CFO, said.
The Direktbank division that served retail savers has shut with its last client – who involved VTB for a store for a nursery shed.
