Russia’s oil output exceeded OPEC+, signaling commitments

Russia’s energy service said on Thursday that its oil creation in May surpassed standards set by the OPEC+ gathering of significant oil delivering nations, while vowing to meet its commitments.

It did not provide figures on production. The service said in an explanation that the issue of overproduction would be settled in June and designated levels would be accomplished.

Since the end of 2022, Russia’s allies and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries—also known as OPEC+—have slashed production significantly. In accordance with the OPEC+ agreement, Russia’s production quota was approximately 9.1 million barrels per day in May, with additional voluntary reductions pledged by eight members.

The energy ministry also stated on Thursday that the compensation period until September 2025 will compensate for the excess production. In an effort to stabilize the market in light of slow demand growth, high interest rates, and rising U.S. production, OPEC+ agreed on June 2 to extend the majority of its deep oil output cuts well into 2025.

The cuts of 2.2 million bpd pledged by eight members, including Russia, were agreed upon by OPEC+ to be phased out over the course of a year, from October 2024 to September 2025.
