Will oil hit $100? It already did in some markets

Oil

In the midst of a fervent focus from oil investors and traders, the price surge in oil has nearly breached the significant milestone of $100 per barrel, drawing attention to the anticipation of a constrained supply.

The unequivocal price of Nigerian crude, Qua Iboe, surged past the $100 threshold, based on data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), illuminating the expectations of a tightening supply situation. Simultaneously, Malaysian crude, Tapis, ascended to $101.30 in the previous week, as reported by Bjarne Schieldrop, an analyst at the Swedish bank SEB.

Saudi Arabia and Russia wield substantial influence over the oil market

The oil market has scaled its highest peak in 2023, with investors fixated on the looming specter of a supply deficit in the fourth quarter. This outlook emerged following the extensions of supply cuts by Saudi Arabia and Russia, the two behemoth producers in the OPEC+ coalition, which has also seen many other member nations curtailing their production.

In essence, Saudi Arabia aptly described by Schieldrop. Brent oil futures, serving as a global benchmark, scaled heights as they reached $94.89 on Monday. Additionally, the benchmark employed for trading a substantial portion of the world’s physical oil cargoes, known as “dated Brent,” lingered just above $96 according to LSEG data.

Certain oil grades, like Qua Iboe and several others that are linked to Brent, have already crossed the $100 mark.

This is primarily because they are tied to the price of dated Brent and incorporate a cash differential or premium, presently assessed at approximately $4.25 per barrel by LSEG. Schieldrop firmly believes that dated Brent is highly susceptible to surpassing the $100 threshold, requiring only a minor catalyst to push it beyond this significant mark.

Swiss bank UBS shares this sentiment, forecasting that Brent futures could eventually breach the triple-digit barrier.

In accordance with UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo’s projections, the expectation is for Brent to oscillate within a price range of $90 to $100 over the upcoming months, with a year-end target pegged at $95.
