Toshiba, a well-known Japanese company, has announced a partnership with General Electric (GE). A leading American manufacturer, to establish a local supply chain for offshore wind power equipment within Japan. This collaboration comes as part of Japan’s efforts to expand its renewable energy sector and align with its zero-carbon initiatives.
Japan’s offshore wind power market is anticipated to experience substantial growth, with the government aiming to install up to 10 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030, followed by an additional 45 GW by 20
The recent second round of offshore wind power tenders accepted bids for constructing 1.8 GW of capacity across four areas. Also, with the results yet to be announced, in the initial round held in 2021, Mitsubishi secured a project with a capacity of 1.7 GW.
As reported by Nikkei, the establishment of the equipment supply chain will involve the participation of around 100 small and medium-sized companies, with a focus on areas designated for offshore wind capacity installation.
Toshiba plans to commence production in 2026, representing a significant milestone in Japan’s pursuit of renewable energy.
In 2021, Toshiba and GE entered into a strategic partnership with the aim of localizing the manufacturing of GE’s Haliade-X offshore wind turbines in Japan. The objective of this collaboration was to enhance the competitiveness of GE’s technology in Japan’s offshore wind auctions.
As part of this agreement, GE will produce a total of 134 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 13 MW, for the three offshore wind projects won by the Mitsubishi-led consortium in the first round. Toshiba will handle the assembly process, as outlined by the Japan Wind Power Association.
The joint efforts of Toshiba and GE in establishing a domestic supply chain for offshore wind power equipment highlight Japan’s commitment to renewable energy expansion and decarbonization.
