EDP Explores Brazil for Green Hydrogen Export to Germany

EDP, the Portuguese power company, is actively considering significant investments in Brazil, with a particular focus on the potential establishment of a green hydrogen plant that could serve as an export hub to Germany, according to CEO Miguel Stilwell. Stilwell views Brazil as a pivotal element in EDP’s overall energy transition strategy, and a new plant in the South American nation has the potential to kickstart the company’s green energy exports to Europe.

Stilwell revealed that EDP is participating in a green hydrogen auction in Germany, aiming to secure an industrial project in Brazil that would enable the company to export hydrogen. However, specific details regarding the production capacity and investment value of such a project were not provided. Stilwell did mention that EDP’s involvement in the green ammonia auction involves a consortium comprising companies specialized in chemistry and gas transport, among others.

In line with its strategic objectives, EDP recently invested a substantial amount of 4.4 billion reais ($917 million) to acquire an additional 32% stake in its Brazilian subsidiary, EDP Energias do Brasil. This move is part of a broader strategy to simplify EDP’s business structure by delisting the subsidiary. EDP currently operates an integrated energy business subsidiary involved in generation, transmission, and distribution. Additionally, it has a separate entity called EDP Renováveis, which focuses on the development and operation of large-scale renewable energy plants.

Stilwell emphasized that EDP intends to invest approximately 30 billion reais in Brazil over the next five years, aiming to ensure seamless integration and collaboration across its operations.

As part of its strategic realignment, EDP may also divest some of its assets, such as hydroelectric plants, in order to reinvest in more promising sectors, particularly solar energy and transmission lines.

One of the areas that EDP is actively exploring in Brazil is green hydrogen. Stilwell highlighted Brazil’s abundant natural resources for renewable energy, stating that the country has the potential to produce green hydrogen at a remarkably low cost. By leveraging its renewable generation capacity, EDP aims to tap into the demand for green hydrogen in other markets and establish Brazil as a significant player in the emerging hydrogen economy.

Despite its focus on new opportunities, EDP remains committed to expanding its presence in traditional segments of the electricity sector in Brazil, notably generation. Stilwell stated that the company will continue to evaluate government auctions for energy transmission projects and looks forward to guidance on the renewal of its distribution concessions.

In summary, EDP is actively exploring investment opportunities in Brazil, with a specific emphasis on green hydrogen production for export to Germany. By leveraging Brazil’s abundant renewable energy resources, EDP aims to become a leading player in the green hydrogen market. The company’s strategic investments, including the acquisition of a majority stake in its Brazilian subsidiary, demonstrate its commitment to expanding and simplifying its operations in Brazil. EDP’s plans to divest certain assets and reinvest in more promising sectors align with its vision for a sustainable energy future.
