U.S. electric utilities are looking to climb client power bills in 2024, expanding last year’s record ascend in power rate builds, the Energy Data Organization said on Monday.

As the country’s grid faces an onslaught of extreme weather and ballooning demand from the electrification of industries and the buildout of data centers in the technology sector, utilities have asked for rate increases to pay for power infrastructure.

In 2023, state utility controllers approved almost $10 billion in rate increments, dramatically increasing the $4.4 billion supported in 2022, the EIA said.

Two California utilities hoping to monitor power framework against out of control fires by covering transmission lines, and going to other costly lengths to solidify the electrical organization, represented 33% of last year’s builds, the EIA said.

Rate increases worth an additional $8.9 billion are expected to be approved this year, according to the EIA, but only if requests are approved at the same rate as they have been since 2023. From the outset of 2023 through August 2024, controllers endorsed 58% of utility rate increment demands, the gathering said.

Complete rate demands such a long ways in 2024 are $12.7 billion, as per information from Administrative Exploration Partners (RRA), which is important for S&P Worldwide Product Bits of knowledge.

RRA senior research analyst Dan Lowrey stated, “RRA has been tracking rate cases since the early 1980s, and 2023 was the most amount of rate increases requested in our history.”
