German utility Uniper (UN01.DE) on Thursday said it was engaged in a venture with the Unified Bedouin Emirates (UAE) clean energy organisation Masdar to create green hydrogen, affirming a report on Bloomberg.
The Berlin government this week completed a 34.5 billion euro ($36.55 billion) bailout of Uniper, following European Commission endorsement—a nationalisation made important in view of Uniper’s openness to flooding gas costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The conflict has honed Germany’s attention on the security of supply and the utilisation of green hydrogen created using sustainable power that is viable with European Association environment objectives.
It hopes to require imports to supplement homegrown creation.
According to a Uniper representative, the company is effectively involved with large-scale hydrogen projects in the Middle East, with the ultimate goal of sending hydrogen to Europe and Asian business sectors.
Is there a flaw in green hydrogen?
“The venture in the UAE with MASDAR has proactively seen amazing public help,” the representative said, adding that Uniper declined to give further detail at this stage.
According to Bloomberg, Masdar and Uniper will build a 1.3-gigatonne (GW) sunlight-based plant from which they hope to deliver clean hydrogen via electrolysis starting in 2026, citing a meeting with Masdar’s chief for clean energy, Mohammad Abdelqadar El Ramahi.
