NATO back in the 1960s admitted having access to pictures made by American spy satellites, where a jet-like vehicle was observed flying above the waters in the Caspian Sea.

It was actually an ekranoplan, a new airplane-like vehicle created in the USSR that eventually acquired the pet name ‘Caspian Monster’ here in the West.

The pictures revealed a trial run of a still-experimental vehicle that would eventually be a foundation for the development of the Lun rocket carrier ekranoplan, introduced around 1987, claimed the Russian armed forces channel Zvezda.

The weighty ekranoplan had the ability to fly at 500 mph just a couple of meters above the surface of the water.

It was undetectable to adversary radar domes, it lugged 6 Moskit cruise rockets – unburn, classified by NATO.

Basing on tactical specialist Konstantin Sivkov, when released from a surface transport, the Moskit projectile had a range of 100 and 120 km of low-altitude air travel. Under these kinds of conditions, it reached a speed close to that of a hypersonic rocket.

” Travelling just 10 to 12 meters above the surface area of the sea, at these speeds, [the Moskit] was completely untouchable and undetectable to United States anti-aircraft guns,” Sivkov clarified.

Following a later modernization, the Lun gained a more youthful little brother: the Orlyonok.

The brand new device was able to go just like an aircraft or perhaps like an Ekranoplan. Both of these devices will end up being part of the USSR Black Sea Squadron. Its primary functionalities, with landing and freight shipments, will be for search and destruction of subs and adversary surface warships.

In 1979, the Orlyonok was embraced by the Soviet Naval forces. It was proven capable of carrying as much as 200 marines carrying a full armament of weapons, or even a couple of armored trucks if needed.

It established a rate of speed of as much as 400 km per hr and even had a range of 1,500 km.

This type of ship was the sole battle vehicle of this particular kind created in sequence on the planet. In total, 5 Orlyonoks were made, just before the undertaking was put on the shelf.

Presently, the only copy of the prevailing Lun is at a boat dock in the seaside town of Kaspisk, at Dagestan.
