Battery metals catch momentum, rival exchanges surpass LME

London Metal Exchange

London Metal Exchange is losing ground to other exchanges in the race to monopolize trade in metals needed for EV batteries, such cobalt and lithium, as they gain traction and capitalize on the shift away from annual fixed-price contracts and toward futures hedging.

The oldest and most well-known market in the world for industrial metals like copper and aluminum is the London Metal Exchange (LME). But its battery metals contracts have been mostly ignored because of its complex futures structure and less forceful marketing.

The 147-year-old exchange could miss out on a huge growth opportunity in the coming years as miners and EV manufacturers increase their hedging if they do not draw traders to their contracts in commodities needed for the energy revolution.

The LME has been greatly outperformed by the U.S. CME Group (CME.O), opens new tab, in terms of volumes of lithium and cobalt.

Volumes on the CME’s lithium hydroxide contract surged by 759% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2023; the LME’s contract has not traded this year.

The Guangzhou Futures Exchange in China has seen a notable increase in its lithium carbonate futures since its launch in July 2023; nonetheless, foreign participants encounter certain challenges.

“The market is not driving the LME as hard as it is driving the CME,” said Jack Nathan, the head of battery metals at Tullett Prebon.

People are not constrained by a particular trade or agreement, though. All they are looking for is the best place to put it into practice and the most accurate hedge.”

COMPLEX LME

The intricacy of the LME arrangement, according to LME Chief Executive Matthew Chamberlain, may be partially to blame for the market’s lack of liquidity.

While most other futures exchanges, including the CME, only offer monthly contracts with a fixed expiration date, the LME offers daily trading, which enables physical customers to tailor their agreements to metal deliveries.

“We acknowledge that the market structure of the LME may provide challenges in our efforts to enhance liquidity,” Chamberlain said in response to a query from Reuters about raising LME battery metals volumes.”It would undoubtedly help with it if there were a greater range of market participants and a more standardized market structure.”

Earlier this month, the LME published a list of recommended steps to boost electronic trading and liquidity.

Industry sources claim that the company’s more aggressive marketing efforts to draw consumers and brokers to its battery products are also to responsible for the higher CME volumes.

In an attempt to boost activity, the LME waived fees for cobalt and lithium in May.

TRACKING IRON ORE WITH LITHIUUM

Until a few years ago, most lithium supply was determined by fixed-price annual contracts, just like iron ore was decades before.

The market for iron ore futures has expanded significantly since 2010 as a result of efforts to do away with the 40-year-old practice of pricing the steel component once
