EDF Energy means to broaden the existence of its atomic plants in England and contribute a further 1.3 billion pounds ($1.7 billion) in its functional UK atomic armada to keep up with yield at current levels and energy security, the firm said on Tuesday.

Fears of a power shortage in the coming years have led several European nations, including France, Belgium, and Sweden, to announce plans to extend the operating lives of aging nuclear reactors. In the European Association and England, most reactors were worked during the 1970s and 1980s and were charged to go on around 30 years.

EDF stated that, subject to regulatory approval, it intends to extend the lifespan of four advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) plants—Torness, Heysham 1 and 2, Hartlepool—by the end of the year.

Last year, it broadened the existence of its Hartlepool and Heysham 1 atomic plants by two years to 2026.

It is additionally inspecting the potential for its Sizewell B plant to run for quite some time longer than planned. That plant is a compressed water reactor-type plant and has a limit of 1.2 gigawatts (GW).

The firm desires to take a last venture choice on this one year from now yet said a reasonable business model would be vital.

With the additional speculation reported on Tuesday, EDF will have put 9 billion pounds in its UK atomic armada since 2009.”Looking ahead, our point is to keep up with the result of the four AGR stations to the extent that this would be possible and expand Sizewell B by a further 20 years out to 2055,” said Imprint Hartley, overseeing overseer of EDF’s atomic tasks business.

In Britain, EDF Energy manages five nuclear power plants, three of which are decommissioning and producing electricity.

The result of EDF’s UK atomic armada was 37.3 terawatt hours last year, 15% lower than the prior year because of station terminations and legal blackouts. The organization means to keep up with yield at 2023’s level until somewhere around 2026.

While building another atomic plant can require many years and cost billions of euros, putting resources into a lifetime expansion should be possible for less cash and occur steadily.

The expense of EDF’s new atomic plant in south-west Britain, Hinkley Point C, has spiraled and it isn’t normal to come online until something like 2027.

One more new plant in south-east Britain – Sizewell C – isn’t supposed to be functional until mid-2034.
