Two seismic events jolted the western region of Nepal on a fateful Tuesday, resulting in the injury of 17 individuals, significant property damage, and the initiation of a landslide, which subsequently obstructed a crucial highway, according to official sources.
The geological upheaval commenced with a pair of earthquakes, measuring 6.3 and 5.3 in magnitude, occurring in the Bajhang district, adjacent to the Indian border. This seismic duo was responsible for the unsettling chaos that unfolded. Specifically, the ensuing landslide, induced by the tremors, obstructed a major roadway leading to the southern plains, as reported by Rama Acharya, a spokesperson from the interior ministry who communicated this information to Reuters.
These seismic occurrences transpired in Talkot and Chainpur, punctuated by a mere half-hour interval between them. The ground shook violently in these regions, and the shockwaves radiated as far as New Delhi, the capital city of India. Alarmed by the seismic activity, residents of New Delhi rushed out of their residences and workplaces in anticipation of potential structural damage. Fortunately, no immediate reports of harm or destruction in the Indian capital surfaced.
Dipesh Chaudhary, a police official, confirmed that a total of 17 individuals had suffered injuries as a consequence of the earthquakes. Among them, there were 11 women and six men, all of whom were promptly transported to hospitals for medical attention. Tragically, one woman was unaccounted for, presumably engulfed by a landslide that the earthquake had triggered.
Narayan Pandey, the highest-ranking district official, disclosed that one of the casualties sustained injuries from a falling object during the tremor. Additionally, in Chainpur, a town located within the affected district, several homes crumbled under the force of the seismic events, compounding the already distressing situation.
